Maybe you have three circles that you want to merge into a snowman. Maybe you have multiple rectangles that, together, create a maze. Maybe you have a triangle and a square that make a house. Whatever shape you want to make, pathfinder can help you add simple shapes together to create a custom shape.Ĭompared to the other capabilities of pathfinder, this one is easiest to visualize. All you have to do is imagine how you would build your ideal shape out of the ones at your disposal. Then, use your mouse to click on all of the shapes you would like to combine (either by highlighting over all of them or using shift+click to select multiple at once) and click the Add to Shape Area button (the first one) in pathfinder. Im embarrassed because I've clearly wasted your time, but at the same time, I don't know why it worked now and not earlier. You can use pathfinder to create shapes from existing ones (circle, rectangle) or ones you draw yourself with the pen tool. I have the same layers/objects selected as all previous attempts, same approach as all previous successful Shapes.

Due to the emphasis you guys were putting on Shape Builder, I shook my, figured "what the heck", gave it another shot, and it works. I figured Shape Builder wasn't working because only the tips of the "Fins" are touching.

This star shape is the first it hasn't worked on, and after numerous attempts, went the "Pathfinder" route, still with no success. Ive used the Shape Builder tool numerous times already to create shapes. In the very first video he discusses Shape Builder (directs to to time in video):Īdobe Illustrator Basics: Part 01 - YouTube Before using illustrator, before come to you for help, I had been learning Illustrator 101 via a youtube series by "Teach Me To Design" called "Adobe Illustrator Basics: Part.". I a banging my head in confusion.Im pretty frustrated.
